Gear Up 10-Mile Run raises $9,000 for local scholarships

GEAR UP 10-MILE RUN RAISES $9,000 FOR LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS
“It feels good to give back to the community, and we feel this run has not only brought runners together but also our local businesses and community,” said race coordinator Lee Graham.
Forty-six runners participated in the event. Andrew McHenry of New Braunfels completed the Hill Country race course in 1:02:29, making him the race’s overall male champion. The overall female champion was Leslie Barclay of Austin, with a time of 1:22:09. Taylor Stephens of Lockhart was the second place runner, and Mike Lilly of San Antonio placed third. All participants received a goodie bag filled with donations from race sponsors, a long-sleeved high tech shirt, a padfolio, and all were entered into our raffle that consisted of over twenty donated prize items from area businesses.

SMMA has been awarding scholarships to local students since 1985. Long-sleeved t-shirts that were left over from the Gear Up race were sold at the 29th annual Moe’s Better Half Marathon on March 3, raising an additional $200 for local scholarships.
“Many of our past recipients have gone on to successful and highly productive careers,” Graham said. “With the higher costs of education, SMMA wants to increase scholarship awards to further assist students in covering these costs. Many students will graduate from a university and have a debt burden that will take years to pay off.”

About CTMC
The hospital, which originated in 1923 as Hays County Soldiers, Sailors and Marines Memorial Hospital, was restructured in 1960. The present facility was opened at its current Wonder World Drive location in 1983. The CTMC staff of more than 700 employees works with more than 220 active and consulting physicians to provide quality services to patients and their families. About SMMA
The San Marcos Manufacturers' Association (SMMA) was formed in 1981 to provide a forum for local industry to communicate common needs, problems and objectives. SMMA is active in the community as well as at the state level, and works closely with Texas State University-San Marcos, San Marcos CISD, the City of San Marcos, the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce, Texas Workforce Centers, Gary Job Corps, CTMC, Texas Association of Business and Chambers of Commerce, Texas Alliance of Manufacturers Association, Economic Development San Marcos, Small Business Council, and state representatives. Many of these organizations are represented in SMMA as associate members.
The SMMA has maintained close ties with all local educational institutions for many years through programs such as sponsorships of scholarships. Seven annual scholarships are provided by SMMA. Graduates of Gary Job Corps and the San Marcos High School receive SMMA scholarships. SMMA also funds two scholarships for Texas State University - one for the McCoy's College of Business Administration, one for the Department of Technology and one SMMA Member Employee Scholarship.
