Fourth Annual Short Story Contest for Adults

The Friends of the Buda Library, The Buda Public Library, and The Hays Free Press are excited to once again present an exceptional literary competition for non-professional writers aged 17 and up.

Get creative and write a short story, no longer than 4,000 words, about anything you’d like! Entries will be judged by local writers, community leaders, and librarians based on the quality of the writing, creativity, originality, and story.

Money and fame! Our top three writers will have their stories published on our website and get a cool cash payout!
 
1st Prize: $200
2nd Prize: $100
3rd Prize:$50
 
Submissions are open May 1 through May 22, 2015

The entry fee is only $20 and all proceeds benefit programs and services at the Buda Public Library.

May 2    Foodstock 2015

Foodstock is a free live music festival benefiting the Hays County Food Bank. There will be bands, a dunking booth, games, watermelon eating contest, Can-Do food drive contest, salsa recipe contest, a kid's area, auction/raffle, vendors, and lots of fun!

We still need contestants for the Can-Do Food Drive Contest. Teams collect food, (money counts too $1=1lb.) and most pounds wins the traveling trophy until the next Foodstock, October 3rd, 2015.

We need contestants, both businesses and individuals, to compete in the Salsa competition. The business with the best salsa will win the Salsa traveling trophy until the next Foodstock, and the individual winner will win a gift card.

We also need contestants for the Watermelon Eating Contest. The winner will win a t-shirt and bragging rights.

May 3    Plum Creek's Front Porch Days

Front Porch Days is a two-day celebration held the first weekend in May that brings over 3,000 residents of Kyle and surrounding areas to Plum Creek's Fergus Park. The festivities will kick off Saturday, may 2nd with a morning Garden Tour through Plum Creek, and a 4-person Golf scramble at the Plum Creek Golf Course. Sunday, May 3rd begins with a 10K, 5K, 3K and a Kid's 1K. 

The festivities continue from Noon to 3:00 PM with activities and shopping for all ages. Front Porch Days activities include face painting, inflatable games, Jigglebug Express, petting zoo, pie baking contest, pony rides, washer tournament, and more. 


Two music stages will host family-friendly bands throughout the day. 

Rock Stage
• 12-12:45pm: Rockaroni and Cheese (kids band)
• 1-2pm: The easy out
• 2:15- 3pm: Skyline the band

Porch Stage
• 12:15- 1pm: Brotherhood of the Girl

ALSO: Local businesses and restaurants will have booths set up with food, arts, and crafts for attendees to enjoy.

May 9    2015 Buda Bicycle Safety Fair
Please join us for the 2015 Buda Bicycle Safety Fair. Presented by the Buda Police Department and the Buda Fire Department.

Local firemen and police will be on hand to provide educational materials and other services such as:

*Bike inspection and maintenance
*Helmet inspection (helmets will be provided for those who do not have them
*Discuss laws and rules of the road that pertains to bicycles
*Certified Police Cyclists teach maneuvering techniques and design a course in the parking lot to practice
*Police will also take participants on a bike ride throughout the surrounding neighborhoods.

RESCHEDULED  from April 11th

Join us on May 9th to celebrate the accomplishments of our Greatest Generation's veterans. May 8th is the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, called VE Day, and we will recognize these heroes at our "Fly In or Drive In" car and plane show. Expect to see over 150 cars and over 30 aircraft in our third annual (weather delayed) show. Originally, scheduled for April 11th, but re-scheduled for May 9th due to weather. The Tricity Flyers RC Model Aircraft Club from San Antonio will be displaying their remote controlled aircraft also. A great way to say thanks to these veterans and enjoy a fun filled family day. Our World War II hangar and museum will be open and flights on our B-25 "Yellow Rose" and a helicopter can be purchased for a special price.

Join us for the Fly-In or Drive-In San Marcos Airport Plane and Car Show at the San Marcos Airport, CAF Hanger, 1841 Airport Drive. To start the show there will be a Warbirds Flyover! 14 vintage planes on static display. B-25 Rides: $399 per person. Top 20- trophies to be presented. Classic, modern, specialty, exotic car or plane, photo opportunities with P-51, Helicopter rides: $35 per person, Rockabilly Band - Deuce Coupe.

May 23    Buda Veterans Memorial Dedication
You may have noticed the digging activity at the north end of Bradfield Park, right at Main Street. Brandon Garcia has began working his Eagle Scout project to erect the Buda Veteran Memorial.  It will be dedicated on May 23d, Memorial Day weekend -- Saturday morning at 9am..
 
A Boy Scout color guard and the Kyle/Buda VFW color guard will participate as well at delegations from BSA Troop 128, the City, and the VFW as responsiblity for the Memorial is passed ultimately to the VFW who will maintain its 4 flagpoles. They will be lit 24/7 with solar lighting. Brandon and his team’s efforts will bring into existence this great community project that has required over a year of planning and fund raising.

May 29 - May 30    2nd Annual Capital of Texas Police Motorcycle Chute Out - Competition Day

The Travis County Sheriff’s office and partnering agencies are pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Capital of Texas Police Motorcycle Chute Out, May 27-30, 2015 at Cabela’s in Buda, TX.  The event is a Texas Police Motorcycle Rodeo Association (TPMRA) event and counts toward the Texas Finals.  The police motorcycle competition will bring together motor cops from all over Texas and beyond to compete in a series of courses and events.  Friends and family are welcome to come out and watch the event and participate in fun!  Free activities open to the public will include an exhibitor show, designated spectator section around the competition track, special motorcycle parking, stunt riders, great music by DJ Bedo and more!

Funds raised by the Capital of Texas Police Motorcycle Chute Out in 2015 will benefit the Center for Child Protection and the Sunshine Kids Foundation.   

The Capital of Texas Police Motorcycle Chute Out is a combined effort between 10 local Law Enforcement Agencies, each one plays an important role in overall organization and success of the annual event.

May 31    Hays Rebel Run 5K
Be a part of the Inaugural Hays Rebel Run 5K that takes place in the scenic surroundings of Mountain City, Texas. The race starts at the west end of City Hall and continues throughout the City, ending back at City Hall. At the finish there will be a post race festive with entertainment. 

Hays Rebel Run 5K is a fund raising event put on by the Hays Band Boosters. All funds raised go towards supporting the Band Programs at Hays High School, Barton Middle School and Dalhstrom Middle School. Scholarships, travel costs and competitive event registration fees are some ways the funding is applied.

We encourage runners, walkers, families with strollers to join us for this fun and important event.  

Parking will be in the north parking lot of Hays CISD Stadium, there is no event parking in Mountain City.
